Highway closed.

A major detour today for anyone heading west.

Kenora OPP have closed highway 17 at the intersection with 71 following a transport/pick up accident early yesterday.

The rig was carrying a powder chemical which when mixed with water becomes highly toxic, but officials were unable to identify it when contacted earlier this morning.

Police say the highway will be closed at least until suppertime while the scene is cleaned up.

The drivers of both vehicles were taken to hospital but their conditions are not known.

The detour route is along highway 71 to highway 11 then into Fort Frances or north on 502 into Dryden.
