A major court battle involving treaty rights is taking place in northwestern Ontario.
The representatives of the Robinson-Huron Treaty from 1850, started a lawsuit against Canada and Ontario.
The First Nations in that area are claiming the governments failed to live up to terms of the treaty, specifically the regular annuity payments which they say have not increased in size as promised.
None of the accusations have been proven in court.
The first phase of the court action started Monday in Thunder Bay and will run until March 29th of next year.
After that it will move to Manitoulin Island, Garden River First Nation and Sudbury.
