It’s being hailed a historic agreement focusing on reducing emissions and dealing with climate change.
Natural Resources Minister Greg Rickford joined his Mexican and Amercian colleagues in Merida, Mexico Monday to announce the creation of the North American Energy Minister’s Working Group on Climate Change and Energy.
Rickford says the milestone will prioritize collaboration on several issues including the modeling and deployment of clean energy technologies, including renewable energy.
He says it addresses energy efficiency for equipment, vehicles, appliances, industries, buildings and energy management systems.
The agreement also centres on carbon capture, use and storage and addresses emissions from the oil and gas sector, including methane and black carbon.
Rickford says another goal is creating reliable, resilient and low-carbon electricity grids.
The Kenora MP adds the new trilateral group will support the implementation of clean energy and climate change goals of each country, including respective Paris targets.
He notes the long term goal is to create a regulatory body that reflects what is fair for the industry but environmentally responsible,
