A new program to help unemployed or underemployed Indigenous mother-led families is now operational in Dryden.
The Urban Indigenous Homeward Bound Program was launched Wednesday at the Native Friendship Centre.
Executive Director Sally Ledger says they are now recruiting single mothers, with children under the age of 17.
Ledger says successful applicants will receive life skills and academic upgrading as well as support in housing, child care, income support and mentoring.
Participants will also be hooked up with mentors and cultural support as well as other wrap-around services.
She says they will be taking in 10-15 successful applicants starting in mid-to-late February.
Ledger notes they require applicants to honour a four to five year commitment.
She says a number of community partners have been working on the initiative since 2015.
Ledger notes they aren’t 100% fully funded quite yet, but believes they are ready to reach out and help improve the lives of single aboriginal mothers.
