Mike, collection day in Dryden is coming up very soon.
“We’re just a couple weeks away from the annual Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day. It’s taking place on Saturday, September 19th from 8.30 to 4. As always, it will be at the City Yard on King Street.”
This event, supported by Dryden Rotary, has been going on for, my goodness, several years. Last year was very successful.
“Absolutely. The community has always stepped up for this event. Being that it is only one day a year, it gives everybody an opportunity who may have items in their garage or their basement that they just don’t know what to do with to get out, get that vehicle through the City Yard and we’ll take care of it from there.”
Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day just over two weeks away for folks in the City of Dryden area. Mike, I told my wife that you and I were going to be chatting about this and she said, ‘oh, that’s a great reminder because I’m sure we still have some stuff to contribute to Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day’. I said, well, we went last year, we still have some stuff? It’s a good reminder for people to look around their households and garages and elsewhere through this upcoming long weekend.
“Absolutely. I know even in our household, a lot of times you bring in a product for one use and end up with a container. We’re looking for all of those items that have those hazardous signs, flammable, corrosive, explosive or poisonous. Those are all things that, you know, we would rather not go into the landfill. This is that perfect time. I know that as we come into this long weekend, I’m working in the garage and I’ve got some old motor oil from a couple of oil changes this year and this is that perfect time for me to get it out of the garage before we winter.”
Okay, good stuff. Mike, let’s talk about some of the things that cannot be accepted and has there been any changes over the last year or so to those restrictions?
“I think the list is getting better every year. Of course, we do know the gasolines, pesticides, antifreeze, household batteries, old medications is a good one. We all end up having a little bit of something that just shouldn’t go into the landfill. We are doing items that, you know, are banned such as DDTs, which are pretty hazardous. So those can come down. The only things that we are not accepting really are anything in the PCB contaminated waste, radioactive, pathological or explosive items. Unfortunately, we cannot accept.”
You mentioned batteries. Those folks bringing old batteries to Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day are helping, obviously, keeping them out of the landfill but also helping Dryden Rotary. Talk about that.
“We do collect all types of batteries, car batteries, ATV batteries and those kind of things specifically actually go to benefit Rotary and some of their local funding for programs. So, we’re always happy to accept those. They’ll be collected and recycled in another city and will just help contribute to Rotary’s contributions to the community.”
The Dryden Rotary Club assisting the City of Dryden in just over two weeks from today with Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day. My guest this morning with Dryden Rotary Club, Mike Readman. Mike, anything else you want us to know about the day coming up?
“Just one last thing. Just for the safety of everyone involved, we’re asking that you keep any of the products in their original containers if possible. That allows us to determine what they are really quickly. Make sure that the containers are clean and well capped just so when we’re handling them in the vehicles, we’re not splashing them around. We look forward to having everyone join us again. Thank you.”
