NDP Leader Howard Hampton feels Ontario’s Auditor General hit the
nail on the head when it comes to under-funding the Ministry of Natural
Resources.
The report states inadequate funding is leading to excessive hunting
and fishing.
The Kenora-Rainy River MPP says the lack of the funds for the MNR
impacts not only fish and wildlife but first nations and forestry as well.
The report indicates moose and black bears are being hunted in
excessive numbers and some aboriginal fishers exceeded their quotas by
more then 200%.
The Auditor General also claims $9-million was
diverted from the sex offender registry to other police projects.
The report has found that hundreds of convicted sex offenders haven’t
registered with police as required.
Hampton says it’s pathetic that the McGuinty Government puts the blame on the OPP.
He says ultimately the Provincial Government calls the
shots when it comes to what the money is used for.
