It’s official!
Former Ontario NDP Leader and Kenora-Rainy River MPP Howard Hampton has announced he’s running for the NDP nomination in the Kenora riding for the upcoming Federal election.
As the Special Advisor for the Ring of Fire for leader Tom Mulcair, Hampton says Northwestern Ontario’s economy has suffered badly under the Harper Conservatives.
He says thousands of good jobs have been lost across the region.
Hampton says his priority is to build good working relations with First Nations across the northwest and create new opportunities in the mining, forestry and tourism sectors.
He stresses he’s proudly stood up and fought for local residents for over 20-years.
Hampton will spend the next few weeks talking and listening to people across the riding.
The announcement sets up the potential of a heavyweight fight for a spot on Parliament Hill.
The Liberals are holding their nomination meeting Sunday, where it’s widely expected former Indian Affairs Minister Bob Nault will be acclaimed.
Conservative Greg Rickford is the incumbent and is the Minister of Natural Resources and Minister responsible for FedNor.
