Human Rights Commission Fact-Finding Mission In Dryden

There are still several human rights challenges facing local communities.

That’s the conclusion from Dianne Carter, the Executive Director of the Ontario Human Rights Commission, who has wrapped up a tour of Dryden, Fort Frances and Thunder Bay.

Carter says a lack of sufficient housing in the region is a major issue.

She notes it’s posing a challenge for everyone in the area, especially among Indigenous people.

Carter says there is also a strain on the state of relations between aboriginal people and other groups.

However, Carter says there are sure signs of progress.

She says Dryden and Sioux Lookout are doing a great job looking at race relations in a formalized way as well as establishing anti-racism strategies.

Carter held a community dialogue session at the Dryden Native Friendship Centre and met with Deputy Mayor Martin MacKinnon and Chief of Police Doug Palson.

Carter is touring the province to gather input on the Commission’s new strategic plan.

It focuses on Indigenous reconciliation, poverty, criminal justice and education.
