Hunter fined for illegal moose hunt near Savant Lake

An illegal moose hunt east of Sioux Lookout has landed a southern Ontario hunter in hot water with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry.

Conservation officers began their investigation back in September of 2021 after a bull moose had been shot on 702 Road, northeast of Savant Lake.

Court heard that shortly after the moose had been shot, a group of ATV riders passed the moose carcass and were down range from the hunter.

Charges of careless use of a firearm while shooting a moose were laid.

Derek Slade of Delhi has been fined $6,000 and has to re-take the Ontario Hunter Education Course before applying for a new hunting licence.
