Hydro One is getting the go-ahead to start the preliminary design and engineering work for a new transmission line in northwestern Ontario.
It includes a new double-circuit 230 kilovolt line between Thunder Bay and Atikokan and a single circuit line from Atikokan to Dryden.
The line stretching from Thunder Bay to Atikokan line would be constructed first with the line to Dryden added at a later date if demand for electricity in the region continues to increase.
The Independent Electricity System Operator is allowing Hydro One to design the entire project now.
The development of new mines is cited as reasons for the new lines.
