It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Ian James Nixon on Thursday January 29, 2009 at his home in Dryden, ON; beloved husband of Beth and loving father of Jed, Nora and Hilary.
Ian was the precious son of Peter and Dorothy Nixon of Sault Ste. Marie and much loved brother of Carol Nixon (Vojo Tomic). He was the dear son-in-law of Bob and Barbara Palmer of Sault Ste. Marie and bother-in-law of Michael Palmer (Masha) and Rodney Palmer (Patti). He was the loving uncle of Ashley, Trevor, Olivia and Fiona Tomic, and Joshua, Emma and Andrew Palmer. He will be sadly missed by his many aunts, uncles and cousins, and a multitude of friends.
Ian was born December 2, 1960 in Wawa, ON and moved to Sault Ste. Marie where he spent his early life. He attended Queen’s University and graduated with an Honours Economics degree. He took his MBA at York University and subsequently earned his CFA and CMA.
Ian spent most of his working life in the pulp and paper industry where he was highly regarded. But his greatest joy was being “in the bosom of his family” and enjoying all the outdoor pleasures Dryden and area had to offer. Ian, Beth and the kids loved camping, outings in their boat, picnics on the shore and summers at Batchawana Bay. Regular racquetball games with Nora were a favourite evening activity, when he enjoyed Nora’s subtle sense of humour. He lovingly played guitar and sang with Hilary, enjoying a mutual passion for music. Ian and Jed have enjoyed many many ice fishing trips together as well as their annual Big V, May long and Fin and Feather hunting and fishing weekends. A contributing member of the Dryden Rotary Club, Ian also enjoyed Monday night poker and he had the ability to lighten any discussion with a joke, most notably at the nightly dinner table with his family.
A funeral service was held Monday, February 2nd at 4:00 p.m. in the First United Church in Dryden with Alice Bloomfield officiating. A family interment will follow at a later date. If friends desire donations may be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation through the Stevens Funeral Homes “Moffat Chapel” P.O. Box 412, Dryden, ON P8N 2Z1. Condolences may be emailed to sympathycard@shaw.ca subject: Nixon
