The Dryden Ice Dogs dropped a 3-1 decision to the Borderland Thunder in Fort Frances Tuesday night but it’s what happened after the game that will likely be the talk of Junior Hockey for some time.
A butt-end to Dryden Defenceman Shawn Newman and then a cheap shot on Jamie Davis once the final buzzer went started a massive bench clearing brawl that saw numerous fights, including a tilt between the two coaches.
Ice Dog Bench Boss Larry Wintoneak says it was an unfortunate incident that shouldn’t have happened but stresses he could only take so much after Davis got clocked by Clayton Windigo.
Davis and Sean Bassingthwaite were both transported to Hospital with injuries and
Dryden Trainer Kevin McCallum was also banged up after getting hit in the face with a giant snowball at point blank range by injured goaltender Tyler Gordon.
OPP talked to both clubs after the game.
There’s no word if charges will be laid and the SIJHL will likely spend the day deciding on suspensions.
With the rivalry at a new high, the same 2 teams will go at it again Wednesday night in Dryden.
