Indigenous Population Could Have Huge Impact On Future Of Kenora District

The First Nations population will have a major role to play in ensuring the long-term sustainability of the Kenora District.

That’s one finding in a new report for the Northern Policy Institute on the workforce and economy of the district.

Spokesperson Amandine Martel says the Kenora District needs to respond to the needs of the Indigenous population.

Martel says it’s imperative that all communities work together with the First Nations to create employment and education opportunities.

Martel says future labour force productivity will decrease further if education levels don’t rise specifically within this segment off the population.

She adds the share of Indigenous people in the total labour force is expected to increase from 27% in 2013 to 40% in 2041.
