Indigenous Population Expected To Rise: StatsCan

Statistics Canada is expecting the growth in the First Nations population to continue to outpace non-Indigenous people over the next two decades.

Stats Can predicts there will be 1.8-million Indigenous people by 2041.

It bases that on an average annual growth rate of 1.2 to 2.1 per cent, compared to about one per cent for the non-Indigenous population.

Ontario is predicted to be home to a third of all First Nations people by 2041. Currently there are around 262,000 Indigenous people in the province.

Stats Can also forecasts the number of Métis people will hit one million, with a quarter of them living in Ontario.
