Iven Marquis Wice

Iven Marquis Wice:

Iven was the youngest child of Emerson and Evelyn Wice. Born in Brooking, Saskatchewan, June 2, 1920. In 1924, Iven’s parents, older brother (Ceathbert) and sister (Ora), moved to Dryden, Ontario, homesteading in the area of what is now known as School Road, North of Dryden.

With his best friend Lloyd O’Doud, they travelled to Winnipeg, Manitoba to ‘sign-up’. Iven enlisted on July 2, 1941, at the age of 21. He was assigned to the Royal Canadian Army Medical Corps Unit, 24 Field Ambulance Division.

As a driver, Iven was tasked with transporting wounded from the front lines to the nearest field hospital, for treatment.

Stationed in Italy during the Mount Cassino campaign, he unfortunately, was the only member of his division to be killed in action. He died on April 17th, 1944 at the age of 23.

He was buried by the local townspeople in a town called Vallerotonda, in a garden, near a house and a church. He would later be relocated to the Cassino War Cemetery, Italy.
