Federal NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh has wrapped up a tour of northwestern Ontario with a stop in Kenora Tuesday.
Singh addressed several issues ranging from addictions, to health care and the environment during a meeting with area high school students.
Singh says he’s always encouraged after meeting with students, noting once they come out of their shell, they have so much to share.
He also addressed access to support services, safe injection sites, and a national housing crisis.
During the stop, Singh promised to better communicate with Canadians.
NAFTA negotiations also came up in discussions.
Singh says “you never start off saying you want the exact same deal, you start with some more demands and then you give up some of them to end up in the same spot. What Canada has said is ‘hey, we want the same deal signed,’ and now we’re having to give up potentially supply management, which for me is not on the table at all. I don’t believe we should be giving up anything.”
Singh adds that Canada is too focused on free trade instead of fair trade, which he says would ensure a level playing field.
He also visited Grassy Narrows First Nation to better understand the mercury poisoning issue from the English-Wabigoon River system.
Yesterday, @CharlieAngusNDP & I visited #GrassyNarrows First Nation & heard first-hand about the impact of mercury contamination in their water.
This is a community situated in some of the most beautiful lakes and rivers imaginable and yet the people can’t even drink the water. pic.twitter.com/Xqu1t3w1FU
