Jonathan Pedneault resigns as Green Party co-leader

Jonathan Pedneault is stepping down as co-leader of the federal Green Party.

Pedneault made the announcement on Wednesday, two days after the latest federal election.

The co-leader failed to win his Montreal-area riding for the second time this election.

“Twice now, I have failed to convince my fellow citizens to send me to Ottawa,” Pedneault said in a statement.

“While I remain proud of the program the party built and the values we brought forward during this campaign, I recognize that we were not able to break through in a way that could shift the course of our country — and there is a responsibility I must carry.”

His co-leader, Elizabeth May, was the only Green candidate to secure a seat in the House of Commons.
