Kenora Bows Out of Common Voice Plan

Kenora Council says it’s willing to risk expulsion from the
Northwestern Ontario Municipal Association for not supporting the ‘Common
Voice’ initiative.
Monday night, Council voted unanimously not to endorse the regional
economic development initiative.
Councilor Rory McMillan says as far as he’s concerned, NOMA has failed
to involve area First Nations in the project.
Mayor Len Compton says the proposal is “fundamentally flawed” because
area first nations have not been properly consulted.
McMillan says he wrote NOMA President Anne Krassilowsky back in
October asking that Treaty #3 and other aboriginal groups be included in the process, but he never received a response.
The City has until the end of the year to contribute $5,000
to the ‘Common Voice’ or risk losing its membership in NOMA.
Kenora’s move was backed by Grand Council Treaty 3 Chief Arnold
Gardner.
