Kenora firefighters putting ‘staches on the line for Movember

The Kenora Professional Firefighters’ Association reports that over half of all Kenora fireman don moustaches in some form — but hopefully not for long.

For Movember, the firefighters are putting a twist on the annual tradition. Rather than growing out their facial hair, they’ll shave it off if they reach their $5,000 fundraising goal in support of Movember Conversations, an online tool designed to help men navigate difficult personal and social challenges.

“Some of these upper lips haven’t seen sunlight in over a decade!” the association wrote on Facebook.

Last year’s fundraiser raised about $3,000. Kenora probational firefighter and Movember rep Joel Pineau says the dream is to double that.

“I’ve got a moustache myself. It’ll be a little cold in the winter [if he shaves it off], but it’s something that we’re all willing to do for a great cause,” Pineau said.

According to Pineau, the Kenora Professional Firefighters’ Association has raised approximately $23,500 for the cause since 2020.

“We work in an environment where we’re exposed to stressful and traumatic situations. Mental health is something that we need to be comfortable talking about both at work and at home. Movember is a great opportunity to start those conversations while supporting men’s health more broadly,” he said.

Those interested in supporting the campaign can donate through the association’s fundraiser here.
