Kenora MP Bob Nault is calling it a successful mission.
The Chair of the Foreign Affairs Committee led a delegation to Taiwan where government officials met with the countries President and other diplomatic leaders.
Nault says trade was the predominant topic throughout the conversations as Taiwan turns to Canada for support in becoming a member of the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for the Trans-Pacific Partnership.
He notes Taiwan is looking to reach a deal with Canada to increase foreign investments.
Nault says it’s extremely important that they explore the benefits of strengthening their relationship with Taiwan, noting the country is Canada’s eleventh largest trade partner.
Nault says there current relationship represents over $6-billion between the two nations, so it only makes sense to continue to build the partnership.
He adds it’s also encouraging to see the efforts of their government to address the historical injustices made towards Taiwan’s Indigenous communities, and the importance they place on protecting the environment and developing green energy.
It was a great honour to meet with Taiwan’s President, H.E. Tsai Ing-wen, as well as a number of other high-level officials, to discuss the relationship between our two countries. For more: https://t.co/urH8se0yxt pic.twitter.com/8Dgepb78iv
