Kenora Opts for OPP Service

Kenora Council has voted to enter into a five-year contract with the provincial police.
The Kenora Police Service will be disbanded by the end of June.
In a standing room only crowd at city hall on Monday, Council heard nearly an hour of deputations urging it to slow down and
compare new proposals from each service.
Immediately following the last deputation, council entered a quick 4-3 vote, with no discussion, to disband the local force.
Councilors offered no explanation for their decision.
The estimated cost of policing by the provincial force is just under $6.2 million, while the city force’s estimated price tag is just over $7 million.
A financial analysis showed that the Kenora Police proposal at 48 officers, was still about 900 thousand dollars higher than the OPP’s estimate for roughly 48-officers.
