KPDSB Approves Of The Right To Read Report

The Keewatin-Patricia District School Board is embracing the recommendations of the ‘Right To Read’ report.

The public school board was one of eight in the province included in the investigation of the Ontario Human Rights Commission.

Shannon Bailey is a Superintendent of Education and says they’ve already started to act on some of the recommendations.

“It’s so aligned with the learning that we’ve been doing,” explains Bailey.

“So we feel like we’ve headed down the right path. We felt validated by what we saw in the recommendations, and now our job is just to continue to work hard to make sure we’re meeting the needs of all of our students.”

The Right to Read report was released this week and was started in October of 2019, because of reports that some children were not able to read, even as they got to high school.

Bailey says the Ministry of Education has also responded positively to the recommendations in the report and has increased their financial support for early reading intervention.

“We’ve received our GSN information for our funding for next year, which does include some resources to put towards early reading intervention. So that’s a really good sign of responsiveness by the Ministry (of Education) already.”

One of the key recommendations in the report was the Ministry of Education had to change the curriculum surrounding reading.
