Language Circles Aims At Teaching Oji-Cree

The Kwayaciiwin Education Resources Centre and Adult Education Partnership are teaming up to provide language circles in Sioux Lookout.

Both organizations are hoping to make this a regular event, with the first session focusing on Oji-Cree being held on Thursday at 5:00pm at the Sioux Lookout Access Centre on Wellington Street.

Partnership Site Monitor Kelly Harbour says it’s important to offer this kind of service.

Harbour says for many people, language is something that has been taken from them or been told that they aren’t allowed to use or speak in Residential Schools.

Harbour says for Indigenous people, it’s a chance to re-claim their culture.

She stresses the Language Circle is also geared towards non-aboriginal people as Sioux Lookout services a number of northern First Nations.

Harbour says they want service providers to learn the language as well.

A local language expert will be teaching Oji-Cree at the free and family friendly event.

There will be a feast to follow.
