The value of literacy and learning was highlighted at Open Roads School in Dryden and Eagle Lake First Nation today. (Tuesday)
David Bouchard, a member of the Order of Canada, mesmerized the audience through music and storytelling.
Bouchard, who is Metis, says there’s no magic solution to get kids reading.
Bouchard encouraged parents to turn off the television and make books readily available.
He adds its extra important for aboriginal children to pick up a book, noting there’s not a level playing field with non-aboriginal kids.
Bouchard also emphasized the importance of implementing aboriginal culture in our school’s curriculum.
He says aboriginal stories and culture are key and notes Canada has taken a 180-degree turn by apologizing for some of the hardships committed to First Nation people.
