Liver Cancer Is On The Rise In Canadians

The Canadian Cancer Society is out with its statistics for 2013.
Senior Manager of Research Luba Slatskova says there were a number of significant findings, such as over the past 30-years, the death rate for a majority of cancers has declined significantly.
However, one major exception is liver cancer.
Slaskova says it has doubled in women and tripled in men and the death rate is increasing significantly.
When it comes to survival rates, the percentage for a majority of cancers is 63%, while for liver cancer it’s only 20%.
One of the major risk factors for cancers is Hepatitis B and C that goes untreated for a long period of time.
Hepatitis B and C are contracted through blood to blood contact, and Hepatitis C is also transmitted through bodily fluids.
Slaskova says other factors that increase your chance of getting liver cancer are heavy alcohol consumption, obesity and smoking.
Slaskova says they are trying to raise awareness about the need of governments and health organizations to work together.
