Local Assessments Staying Put

Premier Dalton McGuinty admits the property tax assessments that went out this fall to Ontario homeowners are already out of date and “unrealistic”.
Most homes and large businesses in Dryden and area were hit with significant increases in their assessments.
But McGuinty says instead of scrapping the 2008 assessments that were done at the peak of the market, to do fresh ones, he wants local councils to deal with the problem.
The opposition parties claim the Liberals froze the assessments to help them get through the 2007 Ontario election without a backlash from homeowners upset about big increases.
