Local ‘Good News’ tidbits

You want some good news today?

Here are some “good news” highlights and heartwarming updates from across the region….

Dryden: The “Eagle Pride” Sports Surge

The Dryden High School community is buzzing following a stellar winter sports season. Several “Eagles” teams made deep playoff runs, but the real story is the record-breaking food drive organized by the student council. They collected over 1,500 lbs of non-perishables for the local food bank this month, proving that school spirit extends far beyond the sports venues.

Red Lake & Ear Falls: The Boreal Trail Expansion

Nature lovers are celebrating a provincial grant recently awarded to the Red Lake/Ear Falls corridor. This funding is slated for the enhancement of local hiking and snowshoeing trails. The goal is to make the rugged Boreal landscape more accessible for “eco-tourism,” which locals hope will bring a nice boost to small businesses in both towns this summer.

Sioux Lookout: Cultural Connection Success

The Meno Ya Win Health Centre in Sioux Lookout has been receiving accolades for its expanded Traditional Healing Program. The program recently integrated more Elder-led workshops and land-based healing initiatives, which have seen a massive uptick in participation. It’s being hailed as a provincial model for culturally safe healthcare.

Ignace: Small Business Resilience

Despite the ongoing national conversations around the Deep Geological Repository (DGR), a group of young entrepreneurs in Ignace recently launched a “Main Street Revitalization” collective. Two new boutique shops have opened in the last month, fueled by a “shop local” campaign that has seen residents rallying to support home-grown talent.

Wabigoon Lake

The community recently celebrated the successful launch of their Junior Ranger program, with a record number of youth signing up for land-based learning and traditional knowledge mentorship.

Vermilion Bay

The local Kinsmen Club recently announced that their winter fundraising efforts surpassed their $10,000 goal. The funds are earmarked for a new accessible playground structure at the waterfront park, set to be installed this coming June.
