A big honour for a young indigenous leader in Dryden.
Kieran McMonagle is one of the nine selected youth leaders that will appear before the Senate Committee on Aboriginal Peoples in Ottawa on June 6th.
McMonagle was selected out of a pool of 150 youth leaders that were nominated.
She will have the opportunity to meet with Senate leadership, watch a Senate sitting and spend time sharing her experiences with the group.
This is the third edition of the initiative titled “Youth Indigenize the Senate” and the initiative last year saw 50 Indigenous and non-Indigenous youth take part in reconciliation-themed workshops on Parliament Hill.
The purpose is to study what a new relationship between Canada and First Nations, Métis and Inuit groups should look like and hear the insights and experiences of accomplished young people.
Kieran is a First Nations, Metis, Inuit (FNMI) graduation coach, working to support more than 300 Indigenous students and families in the Keewatin Patricia District.
Historically, approximately 30% of Indigenous students have graduated on time in her secondary school, but with her support approximately 80% are projected to graduate this year.
