The push for the province to free up surplus Crown Land for municipalities continues.
Dryden Mayor Greg Wilson was part of a Kenora District delegation recently lobbying for a change in rules.
“We’ve attempted for years to get various ministries to sell or swap us land, dating as far back as 2016 on my watch and that’s not counting previous councils who have made some more attempts. So, I just want to thank Minister Rickford who got the right senior civil servants in the room.
Wilson says, “They made a commitment during the meeting to come to a relatively quick yes-or-no decision within a certain timeframe for a number of properties in Ontario that they have identified as potentially surplus.”
Wilson notes the discussion was positive and is hoping for a decision within a year.
Machin has been one of the long-time leads urging the government to transfer property to municipalities for tourism and economic opportunities.
