Local sports for Friday, March 20th

A busy weekend for hockey playoffs in northwestern Ontario.

The first round of the SIJHL playoffs get underway on two fronts.

The Thunder Bay North Stars entertain the Ironwood Lumberjacks and the Kam River Fighting Walleye are at home to the Sioux Lookout Bombers.

The other series, the Dryden GM Ice Dogs host the Red Lake Miners on Sunday to start that series.

The first round series are best-of-seven affairs.

Meanwhile, the Kenora U18 AAA Thistles are in Thunder Bay for the Northwest playdowns.

The Thistles play the Thunder Bay Kings in a best-of-three series with game one tonight.

Game two is tomorrow and three, if necessary, is Sunday afternoon at the First Nations Arena in Thunder Bay.

The winner moves on to the Telus Western Regional championships in Regina.
