Support is needed more than ever this year as Bladder Cancer Canada’s annual fundraising and awareness walk remains virtual due to COVID-19.
‘Canada Walks for Bladder Cancer’ traditionally raises $600,000 each year and is being held Saturday, September 25 and Sunday, September 26.
The theme is ‘Walk Where You Are’ as pandemic restrictions prevent us from gathering in public.
Local BCC Chair Ferg Devins says this is a critically important event.
“Bladder cancer is the 5th most prevalent cancer in Canada. So, it’s so important for us to raise awareness about the disease and the most common symptom is blood in the urine. So, if you see red, you see your doctor!”
There were just over 12,000 cases reported across Canada last year.
Devins adds, “I think in rural parts of the country it’s so critical for people to understand, if you see blood once in your urine you should call your doctor and you should see a neurologist to ensure that it is not something more serious. And I mean once.”
He notes early detection is key as it’s a highly treatable cancer and many patients go on to live healthy lives.
“I’m a survivor of non-muscle invasive, high-grade cancer, and I survived. I had two tumours removed back in March of 2014. I then underwent treatment with BCG for 18 months and you know here I am, all clear, seven years later.”
You are encouraged to register today at Canada Walks for Bladder Cancer and walk where you are on the weekend.
