The Keewatin-Patricia Elementary Teacher and Occasional Teacher Locals are throwing their support towards the local NDP candidates for Thursday’s provincial election.
The union is endorsing JoeAnne Formanek Gustafson for Kenora-Rainy River, Sol Mamakwa in Kiiwetinoong and Judith Monteith-Farrell for Thunder Bay-Atikokan.
Local President Kim Douglas says Ontario public schools have been underfunded for years and things are worse now.
Douglas lists a number demands for the provincial parties to address.
They include:
-lowering class sizes to improve student learning, support for students, and safety
-caps for kindergarten classes and grades 4 to 8
-protecting the highly successful Kindergarten staffing model that includes a teacher and designated early childhood educator
-ending hybrid learning
-delivering additional support for students with special education needs
-a commitment to equity and inclusion
-an independent review of the funding formula
Douglas says, “We need to do all we can to elect a government that adequately funds, supports, and values public education.”
Keewatin-Patricia Elementary Teacher and Occasional Teacher Local represents roughly 500 public elementary teachers.
I was honoured to receive the endorsement of the Ontario Secondary School Teachers' Federation @osstf today.
