Long List Of Recommendations Issued In Inquiry

A list of 21-recommendations is coming out of the coroners inquest looking into the death of Grassy Narrows resident Gloria Assin.

The jury handed in their recommendations targeted at a number of groups including Provincial Police, the NeChee Friendship Centre in Kenora, First Nations and other social service agencies.

The common theme is a need for all of the groups to work together better, ensure direct lines of communication and develop a process to take intoxicated people to the appropriate service.

The OPP has also been directed to review its use of seatbelts policy and clarify who is required to wear seatbelts.

They also want centre pull design seatbelts installed in all police vehicles that transport prisoners.

The OPP is also being asked to reduce the use of the Liquor Licence Act to arrest intoxicated people.

All the agencies named in the verdict have one year to issue a formal response.
