Children in the region aren’t getting enough daily physical activity.
That’s one of the findings in a report released by People for Education, which says due to the lack of physical education teachers in elementary schools, kids are falling short of the recommended 60-minutes a day of activity.
Elaine Fischer is a health promoter with the Northwestern Health Unit, and says it’s been a priority identified by a number of organizations for many years.
Fischer says developing physical activity early on in life is key to life long habits.
Only 7-percent of Canadian children are meeting the daily activity requirements, and Fischer says that’s alarming.
She says if we can increase the time spent on physical activity, the benefits for kids are enormous including a huge increase in academic achievement.
