Mamakwa Calls For Provincial Day For Truth and Reconciliation

The province is being asked to make Truth and Reconciliation Day a provincial holiday.

The federal government designated September 30 as a national holiday.

Kiiwetinoong MPP Sol Mamakwa made the emotional plea in the Ontario Legislature Tuesday.

“We had a chance to do more, to properly commemorate this day, and this government did nothing,” states Mamakwa.

“Will this government do the right thing and make September 30 a public day of healing and reconciliation.”

House leader Paul Calandra says the government is more than willing to work on a provincial day of Truth and Reconciliation.

“The member (Sol Mamakwa) called me in advance to suggest there had not been unanimous support within the first nation communities to recognize that as the day, but that it would be important there be a day. The member was working on a bill which he would later work with me to present to this house.”

Last Thursday was the first national day for Truth and Reconciliation.
