Mamakwa Concerned With High COVID Rates In North

Ontario’s Health Minister admits the north may be a couple of weeks behind the rest of the province when it comes to COVID-19 cases.

Sol Mamakwa is the MPP for the Kiiwetinoong riding and says they have been seeing rising case numbers recently.

“There are over 600 active cases of COVID in 25 first nations with more in the adjacent towns,” Mamakwa explained during Question Period on Wednesday.

“The north is in a critical stage in our fight against COVID.”

Mamakwa says the province needs to make sure the north has the resources available to battle another wave of COVID-19.

“COVID numbers may be in decline in the southern parts of Ontario. We continue to see extremely high numbers of COVID-19 in first nations in the north. The province-wide easing of restrictions completely misses what’s happening and what’s needed in the north.”

Mamakwa is asking the Health Minister to ensure public health measures meet the needs of the north.
