An elderly man is facing criminal charges after O-P-P officers found a
barge with 30 passengers dumping raw sewage into a lake west of Thunder Bay.
Officers say they were on marine patrol when they inspected a 20-metre
barge about to leave on a three-hour tour of Lake Shebandowan.
They found the vessel was dumping raw sewage directly into the
lake, in violation of the province’s Environmental Protection Act.
Police also discovered the boat was not registered to conduct
charter tours.
Transport Canada has issued a detention order prohibiting the
owner from operating the vessel while an investigation is conducted.
