Ottawa says a new palladium and copper mine in Marathon has to be reviewed by independent experts.
The government says the site has the potential for “significant adverse effects” on lakes in the area.
The Stillwater Mining Company’s project was sent to a review after concerns were raised by the fisheries department and Transport Canada.
Stillwater is to build an open-pit operation if the project passes the environmental review process and is able to acquire necessary operating permits.
The projected operating life is about 12 years.
