Mask Mandate Lifted; Health Unit Still Recommending Use

Masks are no longer mandatory in indoor public settings in Ontario.

However, the Northwestern Health Unit is recommending that you continue to wear them due to high COVID numbers in our region.

Medical Officer of Health Dr. Kit Young Hoon says evidence shows masking provides an additional layer of protection and is effective in preventing the spread of the virus.

She is also suggesting limiting the number of people at indoor gatherings, physical distancing, and staying home when feeling unwell.

Masking is still required in hospitals, long term care homes, other health care settings, shelters, and public transit.

Masking requirements have also been lifted in schools, as has cohorting.

Local businesses are able to make their own masking rules and individuals may still choose to wear one.

Dr. Young Hoon says, “The public is encouraged to show kindness and respect to those who choose to continue to wear a mask.”

Premier Doug Ford tweeted Monday morning calling the day “an important milestone in our fight with COVID.”

“Thanks to your hard work, sacrifice and willingness to rise to the occasion, Ontario is now at a place where we can safely remove the mask mandate in most settings. Please be kind, safe & cautious.”

Kenora-Rainy River MPP Greg Rickford says the province is following the science and using the same data that other province’s are in lifting their mask mandates.
