The Northwestern Health Unit is asking municipal leaders to take action to help combat substance abuse.
Medical Officer of Health Dr. Kit Young-Hoon suggests a municipal ban on smoking in places like parks, beaches and outdoor festivals.
Young-Hoon is also pushing for stronger municipal alcohol policies.
She says creating more smoke free spaces and a municipal alcohol policy can help change the norms around the use of smoking and alcohol.
Young-Hoon stresses community leaders have the power to make a change.
She adds things like creating recreational opportunities can help lead youth away from substance use or misuse.
