Melillo Concerned With Gun Control Amendments

The MP for the Kenora Riding is questioning the federal government’s gun legislation again.

Eric Melillo says amendments to Bill C-21 would ban several types of long guns.

“They are adding more shot guns, hunting rifles and a number of long guns,” says Melillo.

“Of course that’s something that’s concerning to me. It’s targeting law-abiding hunters and sports shooters and it’s not going to do anything to combat gun violence in our cities.”

One of the amendments to Bill C-21 says “a firearm that is a rifle or shotgun, that is capable of discharging centre-fire ammunition in a semi-automatic manner and that is designed to accept a detachable cartridge magazine with a capacity greater than five cartridges of the type for which the firearm was originally designed.”

Melillo outlined his concerns when he attended a Commons Committee meeting last week.

Three western provinces, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba have also spoken out against the changes saying the amendments do nothing to target illegal gun imports from the US.
