Metis Paddlers Reach Fort Frances

A group of Metis youth is on the next leg of their journey across Ontario.

About a dozen ambassadors are travelling by canoe and they reached Fort Frances Wednesday.

Courtney Vaughn of Sudbury says it has been a phenomenal experience for her to retrace the route of her ancestors.

Vaughn says she’s been able to connect with the lifestyle of her ancestors, connect with the communities along the route and connect with other Metis youth.

Samantha Cuddy of Oakville says the trip has allowed them to learn more about their heritage as well as educate others about it.

Cuddy believes Metis culture is often overlooked.

Samantha LaVallee of Powassan says its given her new respect for the land and nature.

The group is expected to reach Kenora next week in time for a Metis Youth Council gathering.
