Mexican firefighters deploy to Thunder Bay

100 firefighters and 4 technicians from Mexico departed from their homes on Tuesday to assist with wildland firefighting efforts in northwestern Ontario.

The firefighting personnel will be coordinated by Canadian authorities.

The governments of Mexico and Canada signed a Memorandum of Understanding in 2014, and developed an operational plan in 2020 for providing mutual assistance and cooperating with each other in wildland firefighting efforts.

Mexico’s Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources says their firefighter mobilization and deployment “reaffirms the willingness of the Government of Mexico to collaborate in emergencies that require a coordinated and supportive response between nations.”

Ontario’s own Ministry of Natural Resources took to Facebook to thank the firefighters from Mexico, as well as other Canadian provinces, for their help.
