March 4th, 2017 will forever be etched in the memory of several young Red Lake hockey players.
The Red Lake Mitey Mites program has been selected to play a 10-minute game during the intermission of the Winnipeg Jets-Colorado Avalanche game at the MTS Centre.
The Timbit program usually just recruits teams from Manitoba, and the coaching staff in Red Lake believe they are the first to be selected from out-of-province.
They did reach out to Hockey Northwestern Ontario and the Northern Ontario Hockey Association and both agencies couldn’t recall having a regional team play a Timbit Hockey game in either Toronto, Ottawa or Winnipeg.
The coaches say the community should be proud of these kids and stress they are excited to represent Red Lake as young ambassadors.
The four to six year olds will be able to play in front of an NHL crowd, with family and friends in attendance.
Red Lake Tim Horton’s owner Ron Parks assisted the coaching staff in securing this rare opportunity.
The team says they will be fundraising and reaching out to the community for assistance.
