Migisi Sahgaigan Preparing For First Ever Powwow

Staff and students at Migisi Sahgaigan of Eagle Lake First Nation will get together next week to celebrate Indigenous culture.

The school is hosting “Harvest Week” activities, with the first ever school Powwow on November 17th.

Organizer Roxanne Martin and Principal Drew Kivell were guests on the CKDR Morning Show Friday to promote the event.

Martin says she ran a Memorial Powwow in Kejick Bay and invited students from Eagle Lake.

She says they loved the experience and that’s one reason why they decided to host one in the community.

Martin notes they are putting a heavy emphasis on Ojibway culture and traditions and want to get the entire community behind their teachings.

Kivell says there will be a number of activities for students including fire making, tracking, outdoor survival, rope making and bird migration patterns.

Kivell says they have invited area schools to take part and they are hoping that this is the beginning of something big for the school.
