Proposed legislation to update Ontario’s outdated Mining Act is being put off until next year after First Nations communities sought more time to respond.
The Ministry of Northern Development and Mines says discussions will now conclude January 15 instead of this month.
Minister Michael Gravelle says both industry and First Nations are in favour of prolonging the consultation process.
Gravelle says the slight delay won’t have a huge impact on their legislation timeline.
The ministry still proposes to have new rules in place for later in 2009.
The government hopes to update the act to give aboriginal communities a greater voice in land management, while still sustaining industry.
