Mining in Northern Ontario

Environmentalists are raising concerns that the Ontario government has
approved more than 1,500 mining claims in the Northern Boreal Forest.
The group Forest Ethics says the glut of claims being issued could
threaten the health of the forest and get in the way of community concerns
about land-use planning.
Minister of Northern Development and Mines Michael Gravelle says the
mineral sector is booming right now, and that’s why so many claims are being
staked across the Province.
The Ministry notes the claim-staking process has a small effect on the
environment and only grants companies temporary use of Crown land.
Gravelle will be in Sioux Lookout today for a community development
announcement at 1:00.
