MNR Busy Here At Home As Well As Elsewhere

There are ten active forest fires in northwestern Ontario.

Six of them are in the Red Lake district, while two are in the Kenora area, as well as one each in the regions of Thunder Bay and Fort Frances.

The Ministry of Natural Resources provided air attack support on the weekend on a 650-hectare lightning-cased fire about 70-kilometres north of Red Lake in Woodland Caribou Provincial Park.

The MNR says crews are now establishing hose lines around the perimeter of the fire.

There have been 127-fires this season, burning an area of more than 2,700 hectares.

There’s a second blaze in Woodland Caribou at over 1,200-hectares.

Meantime, the MNR continues to lend a helping hand out west.

There are now 143 personnel as well as pumps and hose equipment in Alberta and 72 personnel in the Yukon.

The Alberta deployment is centred around Lac La Biche, Whitecourt, Fort Chippewa and Fort McMurray.

The forest fire hazard here at home is high in the west and northwest sectors of the region, moderate in the central and northeast sectors and low in the southeast.

Rain is in the forecast for Tuesday and Wednesday.
