MNR Planning Prescribed Burns In Sioux Lookout District

The Ministry of Natural Resources is planning several prescribed burns in the Sioux Lookout area starting this Spring.
Fire Behaviour Specialist Scott Wiseman says one of the fires is an 80-hectare one on the Lac Seul Islands.
Wiseman notes the blaze is designed at restoring and maintaining the ecological integrity of the area.
The major one is the Wind Lake Tornado burn, covering a large area from Ear Falls, to Red Lake, to Lac Seul and Sioux Lookout.
Wiseman says a tornado tore through the area in 2007-2008 resulting in considerable debris.
He notes the damage is a serious fire hazard.
Wiseman says they started working on the burn last year and it covers 1,100 hectares of land.
The third prescribed burn is the Raggedwood burn.
The purpose is to eliminate slash pile that has been left behind in order to replant trees.
