More Layoffs At Resolute Mill In Fort Frances

Another shutdown and more job layoffs at Resolute Forest Products in Fort Frances.
The company has announced that it’s halting production on the last running paper machine at the end of this month for an undetermined length of time.
Spokesperson Xavier Van Chau says it will likely be for an “extended” period of time and he blames the move on poor conditions.
He notes the market has been deteriorating for some time and there’s no signs of improvement in the first quarter of the year.
Approximately 150 employees will be impacted, but Van Chau says some may be offered employment at its other operations.
Fort Frances Mayor Roy Avis says the move is surprising given the strong Canadian dollar.
Avis says he thought things were looking up.
Avis says the announcement will likely change budget discussions.
